Canoeing in the Rogen area and the Femundsmarka

Go canoeing in mountain terrain. The nature reserve Rogen will in all likelihood be the experience of a lifetime. In Rogen, with its peculiar nature, its never-ending system of lakes, its geographical situation, and its bare environment, you will stand before an authentic wildlife experience.
In the old forests there are fallen trees strewn like spillikins, and you cannot be sure that there will be paths along all passages. You may very well be the first human in the spot! If you are lucky you may see some of the unique animal life of the area, like for example bear, lynx, wolverine, elk, eagle, reindeer, or musk oxen! There will be opportunities for hard trips that span several weeks or simple day trips in canoe or kayak.

You should be experienced, be in good physical condition and have proper equipment if you wish to make one of the longer trips that sometimes finish in Norway.

It should also be remembered that Rogen is wilderness, in other words: no roads, kiosks or doctors.

Tours in the Rogen area

1) Lake Käringssjön return trip

The smoothest way of exploring Rogen where you start and finish where the road ends – in the heart of Rogen. From Käringsjövallen there are numerous possibilities when planning your tour. Our favourite is paddling the system of small lakes and tarns upstream towards Lake Stor-Rödsjön and Skedbro, further on to Rödviken in Rogen and then back.

Weather permitting the northern side of Rogen is simply glorious with sandy bays, crystal-clear water and wonderful views. If you are keen on fishing, the waters here have populations of beefy grayling and salmon trout!

2) Käringsjövallen return trip

If you are aiming to explore fishing for grayling and the knotty pine trees in Vingarna and the western Abborvikarna bays, you should choose this tour; here are many shelters where you can cook your catch on the campfire. Should you prefer to make a quick journey down to Rogen with its sandy beaches and extraordinary wilderness, it is also quite feasible. This is a tour suitable to most people aiming for a week in the wilderness.

3) Käringsjövallen - Röros, Norway

Toughest of them all; a true adventure even for the most experienced aiming for a memory for life! This tour starts with a long lift of canoe and packing down to Lake Vingsjön and the start of the paddling. Further down towards Lake Stortandsjön, perhaps with overnight stay in a cosy shelter.

Many visitors dedicate a few days to exploring the Rogen area with visits to the lakes Bredåsjön and Våndssjön on foot. Our suggestion is to spend much time from the western end of Rogen down to Femunden; this stretch is certainly the toughest! The part between Nedre Roasten and Röa is quite steep; long walks along the river in rocky and steep terrain intermix with incredibly great paddling along the quieter bits.

Please note that we dissuade you from paddling the white-water parts since the relatively quiet patches quickly turn into waterfalls and slides. Once arrived at Femunden, paddle on northbound and further upstream into Feragen before turning westbound and proceeding towards Röros along the River Håelva.

Misc: It is also possible to start at Lake Käringssjön against an extra surcharge.

4) Kärringsjövallen - Feragen, Norway

Almost as tough as the Röros tour but at a reduced price! This tour is manageable in about 8 days, providing the weather remains fine when passing the large lakes, Rogen, Femunden and Feragen.

This is our particular favourite in the area; you start paddling in the lower highlands before proceeding to the two large lakes with excellent fishing and swimming. Two separate worlds within the scope of a few days –almost constantly with the summer habitat of the musk-ox, Mount Storvigeln about 1500 metres above sea level in the horizon!

Please note that the tour may prove difficult for many. The long lifts in difficult terrain and paddling on large lakes should make the novices think twice before booking.

5) Käringssjövallen – Lake Käringssjön (alt. Lake Käringssjön – Käringssjövallen)

One of our easier tours starting at Käringssjövallen, paddling via Vingarna, Tandsjön, Rogen before setting off to explore the small tarns north of Rogen and finishing at Lake Käringssjön. The tour features a few longer lifts, Käringsjövallen – Vingarna, about 700 metres, and the stretch between Vingarna and Lake Tandssjön, about 500 m, but these paths are foot-bridged and well-used.

The tour is possible to do in less than seven days but in order to truly explore Rogen we recommend a full week here. Why not mix paddling with hiking up to Lake Bredåsjön, to the summit of Mount Bustvålen or one of the other interesting peaks? There is so much to see and do in this area! Visitors in search of comfort may opt to stay overnight in STF Rogenstugan; a true delight after a long day of paddling!
